According to the tradition, every 12 months in the calendar had a dedication to a deity. However, the extra month,that is Adhika Maas was not so assigned and approached Vishnu in distress. So Vishnu decided to give his name and importance to Adhika Maas hence it is known as Purushottam Mass and dedicated to Him. The day marks the end of Pratham Ashwin Maas and Vishnu shlokas and mantras are chanted, good deeds and generosity performed holy bathing takes place. It is said that those who do perform Yagna reduce hardship.
